Return of Kevin Pietersen makes the English squad stronger
The return of Kevin Pietersen has strengthened the English team, but one wonders if his teammates would forget the recent controversy and gel with him like before.

KEVIN PIETERSEN is the backbone of the English cricket team and his inclusion for England's tour of India has just strengthened their squad. It was a much-needed selection for the difficult tour of India, where he is going to hold the key. It is his performance, which might determine the result of the matches as well as the series. The player is making a comeback into the team after he was dropped for disciplinary reasons during the summer.

Among the current crop of players, Kevin Pietersen is the best player for England as far as batting is concerned. With the Indian conditions more suited for spinners, Kevin's ability to play the turning ball on such tracks is just going to help the English team. He is one of the best players of spin bowling in world cricket as he always moves to the pitch of the ball curtailing the turn that is provided by the pitch. He does not mind dancing down the track to loft the bowlers for huge sixes, which would create a defensive mindset among his opponents, thereby opening gaps for easier singles.

They do have other players in the team, such as J. Trott, Alistair Cook etc who are capable of handling the Indian spin attack of R Ashwin and Ojha. But this team could have found life difficult without the experience of Pietersen in sub continental conditions. He brings in a huge experience to the English team, which lends confidence to the rest of the English batsmen as well. Apart from his batting ability, he is also a decent spinner, especially when the conditions are favourable for a spinner.

With his comeback, he would straight away walk into one of the most important positions in the batting order- no 3, which he has made his own ever since he started to play great knocks for England. Coming at No 3, he will have a major role to tackle the new ball, if they lose an early wicket, or play his normal game (aggressive), if the openers give a good start. He is capable of switching gears anytime.

But, all is not rosy about Pietersen's return to the English team. How can the same bunch of English cricketers trust Pietersen when he betrayed his home team and gave suggestions to his opponents to dismiss Andrew Strauss. Those players within the team might have lost the respect for the player at that very moment, but they need to keep those things behind the back and play as a unit. The series is going to be a test of his physical and mental strength, especially the latter. He needs to maintain the decorum of the team, else it could be his last series for England.

He is a strokeplayer, but sometimes, he is too much aggressive and gives his wicket away, which he cannot afford to do so in this tour. One wonders if the player would be picked, if it was not such a tough tour like this one. He needs to play a responsible innings. The English team would be highly dependent on Kevin Pietersen to put up good scores every time he walks onto bat. But, that is not humanely possible for Pietersen as well, so what if the player does not live up to the expectations, rest of the players need to stand up and be counted, as cricket has never been a one man’s game and will never be.
