Review conference on Urmila's book Srijan Samagra
On July 23, 2010, a conference of prominent authors reviewed Urmila Satya Bhushan's latest book, a collection of her short stories 'Srijan Samagra- Vol 1' at the Library Hall, Russian Centre for Science and Culture.
URMILA SATYA BHUSHAN is a renowned Hindi litterateur and is the founder chairperson of literary organisation ‘Parichay’. On July 23, 2010, a conference of prominent authors reviewed her latest book, a collection of her short stories ‘Srijan Samagra- Vol 1’ at the Library Hall, Russian Centre for Science and Culture.

Prominent Hindi writer Balswaroop Rahi was the chief guest at the conference and writers, poets Rajendra Gautam, Laxmi Shankar Bajpei, Mahesh Darpan and Prem Chand Sahajwala were the featured speakers of the conference. Sahajwala read a review paper on Urmila Satyabhushan’s book and said that the author proves her very wide world of experience and most of the 27 stories of this collection of present realistic glimpses of a woman’s life in Indian society.

Urmila, with her expert writing talent presents a very authentic account of the social life of an Indian woman. The Indian woman lives under many an environmental constraint and faces defeat on many a front in this male dominated society. He expressed special admiration of some of the short stories like ‘Ab aur naheen’ and said that he admires them most because in them a woman revolts against injustice and cruelty of the male.

Rajendra Gautam said that Urmila Satya Bhushan has depicted love between man and woman quite authentically in these stories and she does not hesitate to depict even the Indian woman’s sexual life realistically despite herself being a female writer. But he had special admiration for the story ‘Roshni Kee Jeet’ (The Victory of Light) which is based on the brutal Sikh massacre of 1984, which followed the assassination of the then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by two of her security-men who happened to be Sikh by religion. He said that World War II is an indelible tragedy of human civilisation and till now, many a novel is being written on the same, similarly the 1984 killings of innocent Sikhs in North India is a permanent shame on India and will remain unforgettable.

Literature is still being written on this historical tragedy too, which places religion in bad shape. On this, Sahajwala reminded Karl Marx’s famous quote: ‘Religion is nothing but opium.’ Sahajwala said that religion played brutal roles in Gujarat, Kashmir, Sri Lanka, Jerusalem, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and many other countries. Laxmi Shankar Bajpeyi referred to the first story ‘Shabas Kudiye’ (Well done girl) and said that the girl in this and many other stories of the collection can be seen in almost every Indian house, who gasps for space to live and freedom to exist but lives under umpteen familial and social constraints. He greeted Urmil Satyabhushan for successfully penning down the grievances of the Indian girl.

Darpan said that the author Urmila’s concerns in this collection are very genuine and while reading this collection, the reader doesn’t feel the necessity to draw attention to either the technique or the style, but is fascinated straightaway to the miseries of the women characters of the collection. From the audience too writers Shobhana Mittal, Tulika and others praised some of the stories.

The chief guest Bal Swaroop Rahi, at the end said, “Only the writing that can convert a writer’s experience in to the reader’s feeling is genuine writing. Urmila stands perfect on this criteria.” He said the first woman on earth according to Indian classics was ‘Shatroopa’ (100 guises) and that in Urmila’s collection too, one comes across many a face of the Indian woman. The conference was conducted too by Prem Chand Sahajwala.
