Revolutionary Credit card to diagnose HIV
The University of Colombia's latest invention, a 'credit card', is helpful in detecting HIV and syphilis. The card gives immediate results and is available at a low price of $ 1.
SCIENTISTS AT the University of Colombia, New York, have invented a revolution “credit card” that can diagnose HIV within minutes after a blood test. The invention is seen as a great achievement in fight against HIV and AIDS. The credit card contains a mChip, which helps to diagnose the infection accurately. The card samples tested in Kigali, Rawanda, gave 95 per cent accurate results for HIV. The card also helps to detect syphilis in people (76 per cent accurate).
All one needs to do is needle prick a finger and put the blood sample on the card.
The blood sample passes through 10 detection zones in the mChip and the results are available within 15 minutes. It’s more or less like a pregnancy test where the result is presented in colour-coded manner, which is easy to understand.
Thanks to the “credit card” people are now saved the trouble of going to a medical centre for HIV test. Since the card is small and light one can easily carry it in one’s pocket. But the best part is the price; the card is available at an affordable price of $1.
Similar tests are now being conducted for creating a device for detection of sexually transmitted diseases in women.
