Ringworm is a treatable fungal infection of the skin
Ringworm is a common fungal infection but it is not due to a worm, but it is a fungal infection that's caused due to dermatophytes. Dermatophytes are the microscopic organisms, which survive on the dead outer layer of the skin (keratin).

THE FUNGAL infection causes a ring shaped mark on the skin. It can affect anyone, but is more common in areas where climatic conditions are warm and humid. If you have a weakened immune system or if you are in a direct contact with the active lesions present on someone else, one can increase the risk of developing ringworm.

The cause of ringworm is the fungi dermatophytes, and these fungi survives on your skin for months on household objects such as comb, towel, and soil, etc., and spreads to form ringworm in four different ways like by human to human contact, human to animal contact, human to object contact and lastly human to soil contact. Sometimes, you can just act as a carrier of the spore without developing any infection due to the fungus, and you will unknowingly pass the infection to others. The factors that trigger the cause of ringworm is having a weak immune system, sweating excessively, sharing cloths or participating in contact sports.

The characteristic symptom of ringworm is circular rash on your skin, which is inflamed and red. You can develop more than one patch of ringworm and they can also overlap one another. The ring worm can easily be diagnosed by the location and appearance. If you are not able to diagnose it clearly then a test with a potassium hydroxide (KOH) preparation on the skin scrapping is tested under a microscope for conformation, reported the website mayoclinic.

The treatment of ringworm can easily be done by topical or oral medications. The medications used for the treatment of ring worm by topical method are Butenafine (Mentax), Econazole, Ciclopirox (Loprox), Clotrimazole (Mycelex) and Terbinafine (Lamisil). And the medications that are taken orally are Griseofulvin (Grifulvin V), Itraconazole (Sporanox), Terbinafine (Lamisil) and Fluconazole (Diflucan).

The cure of ring worm by the natural way depends on the severity of the ringworm. Most of the natural ingredients used for the cure of ringworm are solutions, pates, juice or poultice which are to be applied topically on the patch of ringworm. Ringworm is not a life threatening disease and can be treated easily, but one must take proper precautions to avoid getting infected with the virus.
