Rio 2016 Paralympics: India's Mariyappan Thangavelu wins gold, Varun Singh Bhati bronze in high jump
Indian paralympian Mariyappan Thangavelu won gold medal at 2016 Rio Paralympics in T 42 high jump event on Saturday. Another Indian high jumper Varun Singh Bhati won bronze for India in the same event. With this India has won two medals at the 2016 Paralympics at Brazil.

Mariyappan, whose knee was crushed in a bus accident at the age of five, is third Indian to win gold medal for the country at Paralympic Games. He has also become the first Indian to win gold in the T 42 high jump event.

President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated both the players for their achievements.

Tamil Nadu, the home state of Mariyappan has announced a cash reward of Rs 2 cr for the paralympian.  

Tamil Nadu's chief minister Jayalalithaa said, "I was delighted to learn that Mariyappan has won Gold Medal in Paralympics currently being held in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil."

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar also congratulated both the Indian paralympians.
