The first version of MSN Web Messenger was launched as MSN Messenger Service on July 22, 1999. It comprised simple features like plain texting and a contact list.
As the service will be officially retired on June 30, Microsoft has recommended customers to use Windows Live People and Windows Live Hotmail.
The company said that it had decided to retire MSN Web Messenger as part of the strategy to to realign the online services under the Windows Live Brand.
The Windows Live Hotmail is an integrated version of Web Messenger and shows if people are online. It also helps to check mails instantly as they will be shown with a small icon and allows users to logout from other locations.
Multiple location support ensures that a user need sign into the web messenger, if he is already into Windows Live Messenger as clicking on the little online icon will open an IM window.
Not only MSN Web Messenger but a number of other products are also being given retirement by Microsoft on June 30.
