Rising trend of Bolt-On Dowry cases in country
A boy from Chennai told his bride to be that he does not want to marry her, because he felt that the pimples on her face made her look ugly. The girl however in a state of vengeance, bolted a false dowry case, saying that he had asked for Rs 10 Lakhs
A BOLT-ON dowry case is a case where a vengeful female spouse registers a false dowry case, due to a reason completely unrelated to dowry, in order to teach her male partner a lesson he would never forget. These cases are different from the false dowry cases, as they occur due to failed romantic relations, cancelled marriages, property disputes, or even collusion against the spouse’s siblings or parents.

A boy from Chennai told his bride to be that he does not want to marry her, because he felt that the pimples on her face made her look ugly. No one denies that this is a heart breaking statement, but beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder and every individual has his freedom to choose his/her partner, according to his/her wishes.  The girl however in a state of vengeance, bolted a false dowry case, stating that the boy asked for a Rs 10 Lakh dowry and he agreed to marry her only after dowry was paid. This led to the case of rejection, turning into a case of dowry.

Similarly, a man from Karnataka had his wedding disrupted when his ex-girlfriend stormed in, claiming that he had promised to marry her and had sex with her. The girl then bolted a totally baseless dowry charge against the man, saying that the man did not marry her since, she was unable to provide dowry.

Further, a senior citizen husband and wife and their younger son, faced the dowry law and the domestic violence act from their daughter in law, who had filed these cases to remove the senior couple and their younger son from the joint property, which their elder son wanted to grab. In both the cases, the husband was not in the list of the accused, since he was in complete collusion with his wife.

The anti-dowry law and the domestic violence act are often abused and this is nothing new. The problem is that, the government wants people to be responsible when using these laws, while keeping the laws intact. Unintentionally, it does realise that people have and always will be unscrupulous, we cannot change them.

However, we can incorporate safety mechanisms in the laws, so that it is difficult to misuse them. We could make it is a punishable offence to misuse the laws. We could make them evidence based and not statement based. The police must be bound by the law to investigate each case.
