Road accidents: What should be done to bring down as they are rising with each passing day!
While writing this article I am not giving any particular relevant statistic as to the number of road accidents taking place on an everyday basis across the country, but the fact remains that the number of people meeting with road accidents on an year by year basis is not showing the much desired reduction level. This issue needs urgent and immediate attention from all concerned.

The following are personal level observation with some remedial measures on this issue:

Having met with a road accident a few days ago, my firm belief is there are many roads in different cities and towns in the country which can be safely declared as accident prone roads. When I met with the accident (vehicle coming from the wrong direction hit me on the knee) as a pedestrian trying to cross a street, I was told that the street is already famous as an accident prone street. If there had been a road sign warning me to be on my guard as I am entering an accident prone street, perhaps, I could have avoided this accident.

Road constables are found only during some hours in select places in some cities and towns trying to control the traffic. Places which are having huge traffic movements should be governed by road constables working for long stretched hours from early morning till midnight.

While issuing driving license to any vehicle owner, emphasis should be laid on the driver to desist from driving from wrong sides or on wrong lanes. Also emphasis should be laid while issuing such licenses to make the driver of any vehicle to adhere to maintain a safe distance from the following vehicle and also never to overtake a forward going vehicle unless it has stopped for some faulty reasons.

It is found that these three issues, i.e., vehicle coming from wrong side, overtaking and unable to maintain sufficient distance between the two moving vehicles contribute in road accidents taking place across the country.

There is no proper way of monitoring the number of road accidents taking place. Many of the victims of the road accidents do get medical attention but seldom is much effort made to record that the accident was occurred on a road and the traffic control department has no mechanism to record this or monitor this situation.

Therefore, road constables should be empowered to maintain proper records and statistics of different roads coming under their purview as to the number of accidents taken place during a period of time. Computer gadgets and equipments should be made available to them to properly record all relevant details of accidents, which should prove helpful in curtailing/curbing such accidents in future with proper remedial measures.

Last but not the least, more and more efforts are needed from all concerned to make the Indian roads a lot safer and secure not only for a pleasant road driving experience but also for pedestrians to cross roads safely.

Concerned quarters can do well to take note of the above and keep doing everything possible to ensure number of road accidents drastically come down and also a proper record is maintained of each accident taking place in the country.
