Robert B Parker, writer of Spenser series dies
The 40 book series became the most famous work by Robert B Parker and the character of Boston based Spenser spawned a television series Spenser For Hire from 1985 to 1988, with Robert Ulrich in the title role.

CRIME FICTION author Robert B Parker passed away today sitting at his desk in home in Cambridge, Massachussets. The 77 year old author is known for his series of detective novels featuring detective Spenser.

Robert B Parker was born in 1932 and became an English professor. However, this career did not last long after the writer wrote his PHD thesis on Detective fiction, choosing to pursue writing over teaching. The Spenser series began in 1973 after he laboured on The Gudwulf Manuscript, introducing the street smart private eye.

The 40 book series became the most famous work by Robert B Parker and the character of Boston based Spenser spawned a television series Spenser For Hire from 1985 to 1988, with Robert Ulrich in the title role. The character of Spenser was an ex boxer and former policeman, who read serious literature apart from being a gourmet cook, when not solving criminal cases. These books were crisp and highly engaging as they were written as first person accounts.

For his work, Robert B Parker recieved the the Edgar Allen Poe Award from the Mystery Writers of America in 1976, a Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America in 2002 and a 2007 Gumshoe Award for Lifetime Achievement.

He also wrote several other works like Wilderness, Love and Glory, and All Our Yesterdays. He also completed the Raymond Chandler novel Poodle Springs, before going on to write a sequal to the writer's classic The Big Sleep, titled Perchance to Dream.
