ROGER FEDERER defeated Andy Roddick 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 16-14 in a thrilling encounter to become the 2009 Wimbledon champion. He also broke Pete Sampras's record of 14 grand slam titles. Sampras was also present to witness the match. Many people thought that it would be an easy victory for Federer, but Roddick had other plans. He made Federer work hard nearly every minute of their match at center court. Helost his serve only onceand that too in 30th game of the last set - an error which eventually helped Federer win the title. At the end of the match, Federer praised Roddick for his superb play.
"It was a crazy match, an unbelievable end and my head is still spinning. This could have gone on for a few more hours I think," said Federer. "It's an unbelievable moment in my career."Federer’s win also helped him regain the number one spot from Rafael Nadal, who opted out of Wimbledon due to injury. Last year, Nadal had defeated Federer in the Wimbledon finals.
