THE FILM director Roman Polanski arrived at the Montreux Jazz Festival on Saturday, July 17. This was his first public appearance since he got released from the house arrest from his Alpine Swiss chalet since September.
The Oscar-winning director, Polanski, was imprisoned by the Swiss authorities for allegedly molesting a 13-year old girl in 1977. Polanski was accused of entrapping his victim with champagne and drugs during a modeling shoot and raping her.
Polanski got arrested in Zurich, where, he had arrived to receive his lifetime achievement award at a film festival seven months back.
Polanski, 76, arrived in a sport utility vehicle with tinted windows. When he emerged, he brushed his fingers through his hair — a trademark gesture — then was ushered into an elevator. The photographers tried to surround Polanski like swarms of bees but he was taken care of by the security.
Polanski's wife, the actress and singer Emmanuelle Seigner, performed shortly after his arrival, wearing a flannel shirt and jeans "That was the theme to 'Rosemary's Baby,'" she said after her first song — a reference to the 1968 film directed by Polanski.
The Oscar-winning director was freed this month from house arrest when the Swiss government refused to deport him to the United States. He still faces an Interpol warrant in effect for 188 countries for a 1977 child abuse case.
