Romney wins after staying neck and neck with Santorum
The preparations for the US elections have started on a very promising note with candidates experiencing tough competition in the lowa caucuses. Mitt Romney has edged out his close competitor in the Republican race by just seven votes.
AS ONE of the longest marathons of election history starts in America, Mitt Romney has secured a win in the Lowa caucuses with just 8 votes after remaining neck and neck with fellow Republican candidate, Rick Santorum. Romney, a former Massachusetts Governor marked a win in the first caucus of the Republican race with 30,015 votes, as ex-Pennsylvania senator Santorum came from behind with 30,007 votes. Ron Paul secured the third place.
Since 1972, lowa caucuses that receive huge media attention have been the first major electoral event for the nomination of the US president. Though the candidates would come up with panacea to cure all the ailments but shaping up the ailing economy, creating jobs and providing sound economic policies would be the main thrust area.
Speaking to cheering supporters, Romney, according CNN said: "All three of us will be campaigning very hard to restore the heart and soul of this nation."
Next level is New Hampshire on 10th January followed by 21st January in South Carolina. Romney, seen as a favourite son could make it easily in New Hampshire but Carolina could be little difficult for northerner, according to CS Monitor. He is seen as only candidate in race who has money nad organisation that can keep him going through weeks of primaries and caucuses.
“But if he cannot build on his base of support, seemingly stuck in the mid-20s, that raises serious questions about how he gets to the nomination,” the Paper said.
Santorum, on the other hand is seen synonymous with momentum. Only last month, he was polling below 5 per cent among lowa Republicans. But he surged as other conservatives rose and fell down because of their gaffes and relatively more focus on their records. “The question for him is whether he can raise money and build an organization quickly enough to run a national campaign,” quoted the CS Monitor.
Ron, the Texas congressman is known for his passionate backing of free markets and holds views like reviving a gold standard or ending the Federal Reserve – a thing critics believe would be more dangerous than the ills he expects to cure.
