TELE-DENSITY IN rural India is 16.54 per cent against the target of 4 per cent, which was stipulated in the New Telecom Policy in 1999. This was disclosed by Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology, Gurudas Kamat in Rajya Sabha on Friday (July 17).
Kamat informed the house that agreements were signed with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) in November 2004, to provide Village Public Telephony (VPTs) in 66,822 numbers of uncovered villages.
As such on May 31, 2009, 57595 such villages were provided with VPTs by BSNL, the implementing agency for the said programme. The remaining VPTs are likely to be provided in a phased by November 2009.
The telephone service was provided under the Bharat Nirman Programme and only those villages were excluded, which had population less than 100, those lying in deep forests and those affected with insurgency, informed the minister.
Meanwhile, a revised list of villages, which were not having VPT facility, has been prepared after reconciliation of actual number of VPTs provided based on Census 2001.
Kamat also informed that 62443 villages still remaining uncovered are also being provided with VPT facility with subsidy support from Universal Service Obligation (USO) Fund. An agreement to this effect has already been entered into with BSNL on February 27, 2009 and 26909 VPTs have already been provided under this agreement, as on May 31, 2009.
