ACUTE SHORTAGE of water has worsened the life of people in rural areas of Doda district in Jammu and Kashmir. Fifty villages of Ilaqa Shiva- Baraso with a population of more than 20 thousand are facing water problems due to irregular pattern of rain.
Swami Raj Chandal, a resident, told that the whole Ilaqa Shiva- Baraso is facing water problem since last 25 years as natural ponds and spring, the only source of water have dried up.Faqir Chand, a villager of Suhanda, complained that it is not a new problem for them. Despite repeatedly approaching the concerned officials, no steps have been taken by the administration to attend to their problems. "People of far off areas are always ignored by showing dreams that plans will be implemented to bring them relief", he added.
Villagers have to walk at least 5 km and stand in lines for several hours to fetch water for daily purposes from a spring, which is at the verge of drying. There is no other alternate to it because there is no other source of water around.Nambar Dar Abdul Qyoom alleged that the government is not interested in solving their problem and they have decided to migrate from the area and will protest in front of CM's residence.Crisis of water shortage has not only affected the humans but animals too, which is an additional problem for the villagers. The villagers proposed that water lifting system from River Neeru can solve their problem. They have appealed to Chief Minister Omar Abdulla for approving the proposal as it is the only cheap and best solution.
