Ryan student murder case in Gurugram: Can legal wrangles and probes bring about school reforms?
A single judge bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has granted stay on the arrest of three Ryan International Group trustees.

The school trustees had sought anticipatory bail in connection with the brutal murder of a student in the washroom of Ryan International School in Gurugram that shook the nation.

The class II student, Pradhyuman Thakur, 7, was found with his throat slit in the washroom of the school on September 8. The school that was being run by the Ryan International Group in Gurugram and now is under the control of district administration.

The parents of Pradhyuman, joined by other parents, had protested against insensitive and lackadaisical attitude of the school and police's bad handling of case. The case was then handed over to the CBI to nab the real perpetrator of the crime and bring justice to the murdered Pradhyuman.

However, the mother, who lost her child, has rightfully pointed towards the non-caring and insensitive attitude of the teachers and school administration leading to her child's brutal killing in the washroom close to the classroom. The school continued, as a usual business, after the killing of the child and the school administration tried to temper with the crime scene by washing the blood-stained floor and walls. In fact, she as the mother of the child, was pointing towards the school had ceased to be web of caring and nurturing relationships and thus invited criminality on the premises.

Ivan Illich, the author of the famous book 'Deschooling Society' while pointing towards dehumanised institutionalized education, in one of his talks had said, "The machine-like behavior of people chained to electronics constitutes a degradation of their well-being and of their dignity which, for most people in the long run, becomes intolerable. Observations of the sickening effect of programmed environments show that people in them become indolent, impotent, narcissistic and apolitical. The political process breaks down because people cease to be able to govern themselves; they demand to be managed."

He in his book, Illich suggests, "The current search for new educational funnels must be reversed into the search for their institutional inverse: educational webs which heighten the opportunity for each one to transform each moment of his living into one of learning, sharing, and caring."

The schools, as learning units in caring environment, are needed to be recreated which, first and foremost, are a web of loving relationship  that support the learning potential of children. The school staff, management must sit together and create a vision of school for their children and live up to their roles and responsibilities to realise that vision.
