Sachin is one of the best batsmen the world has seen. But, Sachin being the best is not true. If one goes by the number of blogs, comments and discussions on this topic, it will eventually turn out in Sachin’s favour. And the nationalistic pride are obvious keeping in mind the Indian population and cricket crazy fans!
But, if one keeps aside ‘nationalistic pride and fervour’ along with extreme pride and obsession for little master and goes by the facts and figures available across various modes of analysis and rankings, he/she will get to see Brian Lara and Ricky Ponting ahead of him from the same generation of players. Apart from this, there are many other players of the likes of Sir Vivian Richards and Gary Sobers who race ahead of Sachin, perhaps with additional weight given to playing conditions.
A fan has to realize that it is not the number of runs or centuries which determines that a player is best. If that is the major criterion, Sanath Jayasuriya should be the second best batsman in the world!
Consistency is what matters the most and it is clearly reflected in Sachin holding the numero uno position for just 355 days compared to Ponting(547) which is quite the opposite of the public view that he was ruling for 16 years! Even Dhoni, whose batting prowess is always overshadowed by his natural leadership qualities has been on top for 379 days.
This proves that those who back Sachin by his sheer elegance must think twice and understand how much does the pretext of class and technique hold true.
