THE GANGA is addressed not as a simple river but as Mother Ganga. This river is holy and sacred as a mother is to her children. But the river has come a long way from its holy past to the murky present.
Long ago, much before recorded history came into being, there was a King named Bhagirath who loved his subjects immensely. He found that the land in his kingdom did not yield rich produce of grain and fruits as it was parched. Hardly any water was available for drinking and bathing leave alone irrigating large tracts of land. He made an amalgamation of prayer and action (Prarthana and Purusharth) to dig canals, bring big and mighty rivers from mountains, and change their flow from the opposite direction towards his kingdom in India.
King Bhagirath succeeded in getting Ganga flow into India as her direction of flow was reversed through Herculean efforts. In Hindi idiom, the words are BHAGIRATH PRAYATNA. Now some greedy politicians are encouraging mining of sand and stones from the holy river banks. It is disgraceful indeed. Ganga River is mother to all Indians, especially the Hindus and is lifeline to the entire North India from Uttarakhand to West Bengal. A stretch of 2000 miles plus of fertile land would turn into a desert if mining of sand and stones is not stopped at the banks of sacred river.
