CONGRES-NATIONALIST Congress Party combine has emerged as the largest party in Marathwada and washed out the two decades Saffron bastion in the region that includes 46 assembly seats in eight districts. Congress front’s strength has surprisingly doubled while the Shiv Sena–Bharatiya Janata Party has lowered down at nine from 25 in 2004 polls.
Amongst the 46 seats in the region, Congress bagged victory at 18 and NCP gained 12. About 11 seats were added to Congress’ account as compared to seven in 2004 polls, while NCP is benefited by one, taking tally to 12. The Congress alliance tally has rose to 30, about double then 18 in 2004. Saffron alliance was at worst performance in their stronghold. Despite the Congress wave across the state in 2004 polls, it was in gain in the region with 25 seats. However, Sena’s tally has lowered by seven seats with loss of seven. BJP has slashed down to two from 11 in 2004 polls. Saffron alliance tally is settled down to nine.
Congress totally washed out Sena–BJP in Ashok Chavhan’s Nanded district, where Congress retained six amongst nine seats. NCP bagged two while one seat was won by NCP rebel in Naigaon. Ashok Chavan lodged spectacular victory by margin of 1,07,000 votes against the nearest Sena rival Bhimrao Kshirsagar who succeeded to get only 6,404 votes.
Saffron alliance also lost presence in Hingoli district where Congress recorded victory at two seats and one by NCP. Maharashtra Youth Congress chief Rajeev Satav won the Kalamnuri seat by defeating Sena’s Gajanan Ghuje. Bhaurao Patil of Congress won the third Hingoli city seat.
Sena is no more in Latur and BJP retained just one seat. Amongst the total six seats, four were bagged by Congress and one each by BJP and Republican Left Democratic Front (RLDF). Amit Deshmukh, son of Union Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh was amongst the prominent candidate who defeated Kayyum Qadri of Bahujan Samaj Party and Sena’s Pappu Kulkarni. In the other significant fight in Nilanga, Shivajirao Patil Nilengekar (Congress) defeated Sambhaji Patil of BJP.
Osmanabad was amongst the key constituency in the state with MP Padamsinh Patil’s son and minister of state Rana Jagjit Sinh was in fray against the slain Congress leader’s son Omraje Nimbalkar (Sena). Omraje wrested this seat from the traditional NCP bastion by defeating Rana Jagjit Sinh. Out of total four seats in the district, two were bagged by Sena and one each by Congress and NCP.
There was much curiosity in contest of five seats in Jalna district. In the tough fight, minister Rajesh Tope defeated Sena’s Arjun Khotkar in Ghansawangi seat. An independent Suresh Jethliya dragged out victory at Partur seat against Babanrao Lonikar of BJP. Despite the BJP MP, his wife Nirmala Danve loss Bhokardan seat to Chandrakant Danve. Out of five seats, two were retained by NCP, one each by Congress, Sena and Independent.
Parbhani was once again emerged as Saffron stronghold, where two out of four seats were retained by BJP and one each by Congress and independent. BJP’s stronghold in Beed was foiled by NCP with unpredictable victory at five out of six seats. Except Pankaja Munde Palve, no BJP candidate managed to won.
For the first time, MNS has managed to open an account in the region with one seat in Kannad of Aurangabad district won by Harshwardhan Jadhav. RLDS succeeded to bag victory in Ahmedpur of Latur district.
Tally of independents has grown to five by one seat as compared to 2004 polls. Amongst Sena rebel Pradeep Jaiswal lodged significant victory from Aurangabad central seat. Prashant Bumb was seeking ticket from BJP, but later contested as independent from Gangapur of Aurangabad district and won. The fourth rebel that recorded victory from region is Sitaram Ghandat of Gangakhed in Parbhani district. He defeated Dr Madhusudan Kendre of BJ who is son-in-law of Gopinath Munde’s brother.
