SAI athletes suicide attempt: AIDWA visits hostel in Kerala and demands action against guilty
Yesterday one athlete died and three others were in critical condition due to suicide attempts by them in a Kerela Sports hostel run by Sports Authority of India. Now as per the latest reports coming in all the three athletes are now stable and the Sports Ministry is looking into the ragging allegations, which has been raised after the incident.

An All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) delegation led by the Joint Secretary K.K. Shylaja visited the Alleppey Sports Authority of India (SAI) hostel where four elite athletes tried to commit suicide by consuming poison on Thursday. The delegation found out that the athletes come from extremely deprived backgrounds and were being constantly harassed by their seniors.

The families reported that complaints regarding the matter were being made to the authorities several times, however no action was initiated against the guilty as a result of which their talented daughters were forced to pay the price.

The delegation also found out that there has been unnecessary delay in taking the girls to the hospital after the incident.

This incident highlights high level of callousness on the part of authorities, who are responsible for running these hotels where elite sports persons are being made to live.

In the light of this incident, AIDWA demands:

1) Action should immediately be taken against the guilty. At the same time, the central and state governments should jointly conduct a thorough investigation into this incident.

2) All the four families should be appropriately compensated.

3) The government should ensure that the survivors be given appropriate medical attention, all costs for which should be born by the Government.

4) The Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs should look into the condition of SAI Hostels and present a status report on the issue.
