Sal Anselona among the finalists in Lenox Contest
A New York City Fireman for 26 years who came out of retirement to help at Ground Zero on September 11, at 67 years, SAL ANSELONA has been chosen as one of the top ten finalists in the Lenox Industrial Tools, Extra Mile Hero Contest.
SAL ANSELONA was a New York City Fireman for 26 years who came out of retirement to help at Ground Zero on September 11, at 67 years. He worked long hours at the World Trade Center site helping the people he spent his career working with. In between, he delivered tools to firehouses that had lost tools at ground zero.

During his career as a FDNY fireman, Sal saved hundreds of lives, put out over 5000 fires, worked for plane crashes and risked his life for not only people, but a barn full of horses and a litter of puppies trapped on the top floor of an apartment building.

One year ago, his daughter wrote an essay for the Lenox Tools Extra Mile Hero contest, describing the hero that Sal has always been. This essay won him a spot as one of the top ten finalists in the Lenox Industrial Tools, Extra Mile Hero Contest. Public voting began on February 1, 2009, and runs until April 30, 2009. The grand finalist will be announced at the race in New Hampshire on June 28, 2009. If Sal be chosen the grand finalist and Jeff Burton wins the race, $500,000 will go to St Jude's Children's Hospital. If Jeff Burton doesn't win the race, St. Jude's will receive $31,000.

.This is the man that should win. This is a real hero! Someone who runs into a burning building when everyone else is running out. Someone who risk his life for others, people he does not know, even animals. Yes, there are many heros, but a firefighter is a true hero in the true meaning of the word; a person of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his or her brave deeds and noble qualities. Yes, this is your man. I hope he wins!

Thank you so much Donna, that is so sweet. My dad has always been a hero to me - the funny thing is I once asked him if he was ever scared doing his job, and he said "at a fire, no", "my only fear was that I woudn't have my clothes ready when a call came in and the truck would leave without me".. takes a certain kind of person to have that kind of response... God Bless all of our fire fighters
