A SERIES of moderate earthquakes hit the San Diego region earlier today, Saturday May 22, 2010. According to the U.S. Geological Service, two earthquakes measuring 4.9 and 4.8 in magnitude struck at 10:30 and 10:33 AM, centered in Baja California about 16 miles of Seeley, California. No reports of damage have been received so far. The USGS first estimated the magnitude as 5.3 but later revised the figure downward.
The quakes caused significant shaking in East County and San Diego, causing windows to rattle on Mount Helix. San Diego County Sheriff's Lt. Hank Turner says shaking was felt in downtown San Diego. Dispatchers received no calls reporting damage or injuries. Today’s’ San Diego earthquake serves as a reminder of the numerous others that have affected the world this year.
This earthquake is along the same fault line as the devastating 7.2 Easter Sunday earthquake that shook Mexicali, Mexico. The region has seen a surge in seismic activity since then. The earthquake that took place today is a mild one as compared to the last one. On May 8th, the same region experienced 4.8 and 4.7 quakes in fairly quick succession.
