Sania and Sohrab Mirza: Singles to doubles
Indian tennis player Sania Mirza is no longer single. The tennis player was engaged to Sohrab Mirza, a businessman from Hyderabad, at a five star hotel in Hyderabad on Friday evening.
SHE WAS was dressed in glittering green and golden colour lacha or ghagra choli and he went for a black Armani suit — Sania Mirza and Sohrab Mirza were the cynosure of all eyes at their engagement ceremony at a five star hotel in Hyderabad on Friday evening. Sania, one of the beautiful faces and glamorous personalities on the tennis court and the most successful Indian women player on the international scene, was coy and unusually demure as the long time family friend Sohrab put a solitaire diamond ring in to her finger opening a new chapter in their lives.

Imran and Naseema Mirza — who worked hard along with Sania to make success of her career proudly looked as their daughter occupied the center court as the dazzling venue was packed with about three hundred relatives and family friends. It was an intensely private ceremony with the family going out of the way to keep the intrusive media out.

The police had threw a security ring both at the “Mirzas”, the residence of Sania and at the venue in view of the incidents over the last two days in which the lovelorn youth had tried to barge in to her residence to request her to marry them and not Sohrab. Hours before the ceremony, Imran Mirza made an emotional appeal to the media contingent to respect the privacy of Sania. “It is a very important day of her life. Kindly allow her to enjoy it,” he said.

As media camped outside their residence in Banjara Hills seeking more details of the function and preparation, Imran made a brief statement seeking media’s cooperation. “It is a very family oriented thing where only a few family people and friends have been invited,” he said. “I request you to kindly respect the privacy she needs and she wants at this point of time.”  He, however, promised that the family will release a photo of the couple after the ceremony was over. Meghana, a family friend said that dress of Sania for the occasion was a creation of Shantanu-Nikhil and a Mehndi was done by Manzoor, a renowned artiste at a ceremony.

Sohrab, who has completed graduation in commerce and has plans to go to London for pursuing MBA, said he was immensely happy. “Main Bahut Khush Hoon. I’m very happy,” he told the media in a brief encounter as he ran around for the last minute preparations. One of the three brothers, Sohrab was busy in fetching the dresses and other materials as part of the preparations.

His family brought 11 different dresses to Sania as per Hyderabadi customs. He appeared unfazed by the unsavory incidents outside the home of her sweet heart. All the excitement generated by the engagement not withstanding, both the sides were not in a hurry for the wedding. Imran Mirza has clarified that the marriage will take place only after two years. “Sania would continue to play till then,” he said.
