PAD usually affects the arteries of the leg, but at times it also affects the arteries that carries blood from heart to other parts of body like arms, head, stomach and kidney. It causes pain and numbness, it also increases the risk of getting infection in the affected area. It is also a trigger to diabetes, hypertension and other health conditions.
The most common symptoms of PAD are painful cramping in the leg or hip, which occurs while walking or doing exercise, and disappears when the person stops doing it. Numbness, tinging or burning pain in feet and the colour of the skin changes in the affected area. Many people live with this pain, assuming it to be a common pain, caused due to aging and hence this disease is a silent killer.
It is usually found in people above 50 years of age, but due to lifestyle diseases like diabetes and hypertension, a person may get this disease before the age of 50. Those who use tobacco or smoke can also develop this disease early. Experts suggests to change the habits and inculcate the willingness to exercise, which will help in dealing with the disease.
