SARAS Mahotsava: Providing a platform to artisans
The SARAS fair gives ample space to craftsmen who have converged in Lucknow from different states along with their master pieces, which have been crafted out from wood to terracotta, paintings to antique looking electric lanterns.
TRADITIONAL ART and craft, which gives India a distinct identity in the world, is dying slowly in our nation. There are innumerable reasons, which can be held responsible for the decline in traditional handicrafts among, which lack of interest by the members of present generation in their family business of art and craft along with lack of good returns on investment have been the major causes for its decline.

But thanks to fairs like “SARAS Mahotsava”, which is organised by the Uttar Pradesh state government every year in the month of February, where these craftsmen get an opportunity to showcase their skills and marvel in public, and many art and craft loving people feel such fairs also give monetary and emotional support to those, who have been keeping their ancestral business of craftsmanship alive.

This fair gives ample space to craftsmen who have converged in Lucknow from different states along with their master pieces which have been crafted out from wood to terracotta, paintings to antique looking electric lanterns, hand made cloth pieces to iron work, glass work to Ayurvedic herbs and food items like mouth watering ‘Dabeli’ from Gujarat and lip smacking ‘Jodhpuri kachori’ of Rajasthan, all are available under one roof at one place i.e. SARAS Mahotsava.

The ministry of rural development has organised this fair in which there are some 100 stalls featuring a wide range of collection from sarees to footwear, paintings to carpets etc. While womenfolk showed more interest in purchasing items of artificial jewellery children were seen enjoying eating ice creams and bhelpuris. These fairs also provide a good outing where good quality products are available at an affordable price.
