Sarfaraz Hussain: The Muslim boy from RSS-run school who topped Assam High School examinations
In a news that will shatter the mainstream perceptions about the Sangh Parivar. A Muslim boy studying in a RSS-run school topped the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination in Assam this year.

16-year old Sarfaraz secured the top rank by scoring 590 out of 600 marks (98.3 per cent) in the HSLC results declared on 31st May, 2016.

The student, Sarfaraz Hussain told reporters, "I am proud to have been a student of this school. It is because of my school that I have been able to secure the top position in the state."

Apart from his recent success, Sarfaraz is a keen essay writer and has won many awards in Sanskrit essay writing, he had also topped the all-Guwahati Gita recitation contest a few years ago.

Sarfaraz, who has scored full marks in Sanskrit till class VIII, said, "I had no problem chanting prayers in Sanskrit, including the Gayatri Mantra."

Assam Education Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma while felicitating Sarfaraz, announced that the government will bear his educational expenses by providing a fixed deposit of Rs 5 lakh for him. Sarfaraz aspires to become an engineer.

Akshay Kalita, school principal of Sankardev Sishu Niketan at Betkuchi, where Sarfaraz studies, said that he (Sarfaraz) had also become the first student of the school to secure a place in the merit list of the first 20 of HSLC exam.

Sarfaraz's father, Ajmal Hussain, who works in a restaurant, said that he had never thought it wrong to enroll his son in the school which is run by the Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Sansthan or Vidya Bharti, an educational wing of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as he wanted to ensure quality education for his children.

Sarfaraz, who is a resident of the Jyotishree Nagar in Lalganesh area and lives with his parents Ajmal Hussain and Suriya Begum informs that in spite of financial constraints he put in a lot of hard work by studying for 12 to 18 hours a day before the exams.

According to RSS sources, Sankardev Sishu Niketan is one of the many RSS-run schools where religious fundamentalism is not taught. The source quoted, "There is no different syllabus for the schools and no one is taught to hate. Instead everyone is taught to love his or her country, which all schools teach."

Another RSS source said, "Sarfarz's success shows the acceptance of the much maligned organisation across all demographics and it shatters the mainstream propaganda about RSS... Contrary to the propaganda, RSS is not anti-Muslim or anti religion but is pro-India with no communal agenda. Its only aim is to serve the country through imparting quality education."
