United Nation's wildlife body, Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) too in its ongoing meeting in Doha has noted that despite several years of efforts the world has failed miserably to protect tigers.
SINCE JANUARY, at least 13 tigers have died in just ten weeks, five each in January and March in various reserves across the country. Last year, 60 deaths were recorded. Now, merely 3,500 big cats are left in the wild of which 1,411 are in India. There is a sharp drop of population of this endangered species.
United Nation's wildlife body, Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) too in its ongoing meeting in Doha has noted that despite several years of efforts the world has failed miserably to protect tigers.
Construction and mining mafia do not want the tigers to survive in the forest. In India, it is wake up call as mafia supported by politicians is going in for the kill.
The Project Tiger faces some major problems, creating a grave situation for Indian tigers. Tiger is a symbol of wilderness and well-being of the ecosystem. By conserving, saving tigers and redefining Project Tiger with introduction of new management system, the entire ecosystem can be conserved.
In nature, barring human beings and their control, rest of the ecosystem is wild. Hence conserving the ecosystem is important and crucial to maintain the life support system. Saving tiger amounts to saving the ecosystem, which is crucial for man's own survival. Tiger population in India may not still be in thrilling numbers and poaching still may be quite rampant but a lot more effort is being place into saving this beautiful animal.
If no action is taken, sourcing from the wild coupled with increased captive production to meet an expanding market demand will pose a serious threat to wild species through unsustainable harvesting from wild populations.
Tigers now need a preservationist approach. Regional planning is important around tiger reserves to foster ecological connectivity between protected areas through restorative inputs with integrated land use planning. The management plan of a tiger reserve, therefore, needs to be integrated in larger regional management plans.
