Say a big 'NO' to female genital mutilation: UN agencies
According to UN, the female genital mutilation (FGM) is a heinous crime still perpetrated against girls in many countries and cultures. While WHO, women groups and human rights advocates describe FGM as cruel and health experts say it is dangerous.
ON FEBRUARY 6, the world community has been asked by the UN to observe the International Day on Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation'(IDZTFG). According to UN, the female genital mutilation (FGM) is a heinous crime still perpetrated against girls in many countries and cultures. While WHO, women groups and human rights advocates describe FGM as cruel and health experts say it is dangerous health issue.

For the eighth IDZTFG, the UN-sponsored meeting and backed by the World Health Organization (WHO) will take place in Geneva on Monday. The WHO said on the occasion, “The objective of celebrating February 6 is to call international, regional, national and community attention to the efforts needed to free women and girls from the adverse tradition of female genital mutilation and to accelerate action towards its total elimination.”

“Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a violation of basic human rights principles, as stipulated in Article 24.3 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), other International and Regional instruments, the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights Relating to the Rights of Women in Africa, (Article 5) and the African Union Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality in Africa, 2004,” added WHO.

Janet Jackson of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) observed, “Women and girls have to be empowered to be able to say 'No' without fear of being shunned by their communities. Convinced elders are continuing to bring on board other elders. It is only through this kind of social change, dialogue and education that we will be able to experience zero tolerance toward FGM.”
