In a major decision, which would go a long way in improving the lot of the sex workers, the Supreme Court has asked the government to provide them vocational training.
IT IS not pleasure but pressure which forces women into the horrible business of prostitution. The compulsions, which force women into this trade not only destroy their lives but also the future of their children, who cannot even imagine leading a normal, respectable life.
With no freedom of choice and options for a life with dignity, these hapless women and children are exploited forcing them to lead a life crippled with indignity, social stigma, debt, bondage and a host of ailments including HIV/AIDS.However, in a major relief the Supreme Court has now directed the government to give vocational training to these sex workers. Not only this, the bench comprising Justices Markandey Katju and Gyan Sudha Misra also felt that the goods produced by them should also have a market and thus asked the government to develop a mechanism for sale of these products.
It is important that sex workers are allowed to live with dignity under Article 21 of the constitution. They must be treated well by the society and the government should make sure that they get opportunities at their doorsteps. Poverty is the cause of many ills but the ugliest consequence of this disease is trafficking of women. The government needs to take effective action to stop this illegal traffic of women as it boosts social evils like prostitution.
