SC extends deadline for linking Aadhaar with mobile phone, bank account till further orders
The Supreme Court on Tuesday extended the March 31 deadline indefinitely for mandatory linking of Aadhaar card for availing various services offered by the government.

The apex court's Constitution Bench will approach a final decision on the matter once it concludes hearing a bunch of petitions challenging the validity of the Aadhaar Act.

Although March 31 was the last date for linking of Aadhaar with essential services like mobile phone, bank account etc, the government had recently hinted that the deadline could be extended.

A five-judge Constitution Bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra is presently hearing a few pleas seeking a stay on mandatory linking of Aadhaar with government schemes. The other judges in the bench include Justices AK Sikri, AM Khanwilkar, DY Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan.

The Union government, in October last year, had made it mandatory to link the 12-digit Aadhaar number with small saving schemes such as PPF accounts, National Saving Certificate scheme, post office deposits and Kisan Vikas Patra.
