Instead of passing stringent strictures again and again, as in the case of the statue controversy in UP, the Supreme Court should outright ban photo publicity and the installation of statues of living persons.
EVEN THOUGH the Supreme Court has issued a contempt notice to the UP Chief Secretary for the state government’s deliberate defiance of Apex Court order to stop construction work for installing statues, it would have been more practical to direct Union and state governments against the practice of installing statues of living persons.
Further, in case of installing statues of departed leaders, the consent of the opposition leader should be made mandatory. Such a direction would then defer the matter to the Centre, if it is flouted in any manner.
Likewise, instead of passing stringent strictures again and again, the Supreme Court should rather direct Union and state governments to totally ban photo publicity of political rulers and other living personalities at the public expense through media advertisements.
