THE CENTRE, Delhi government as well as the Naz Foundation were issued notices by the Supreme Court on Thursday, asking them to clarify their stand on the landmark Delhi High Court verdict decriminalising gay sex, by July 20. The lawsuit was filed by astrologer Suresh Kaushal who contended that the ruling was 'perverse'.

Suresh Kaushal also pointed out that since the controversial  Delhi High Court verdict, there had been seven marriages between gay couples; he contended that the ruling was clearly posing a threat to traditional percepts of marriage. Suresh Kaushal's petition against the verdict is only the second petition against the controversial ruling. The first petition to challenge the verdict was filed by the Baba Ramdev.

A Supreme Court bench consisting of Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice P Sathasivam stated that any orders made subsequent to the Delhi High Court verdict would be looked into only after parties to whom notices had been issued, had made their stand clear. Most political parties have expressed their displeasure with the Delhi High Court ruling, with only the Communist Party of India-Marxist supporting the landmark verdict.
