SC panel taking up the cause of rehabilitation of sex workers
Sex workers are a community which is looked down upon and they are living in extreme conditions. Supreme Court wants to rehabilitate them to give them a better future.
THE CONDITION of sex workers in India is pitiful and most of the girls and ladies have been forced into this trade either by poverty, circumstances or by some middleman.

Thus the Supreme Court on Tuesday stated that the sex workers are not a threat to the society and most of them are forced into it, so it is time that the state takes responsibility and frame some schemes for vocational training so that these people can lead a dignified life. A panel set up for the cause wants to help them regain their life.

A Bench of Justices, Markandey Katju and Gyan Sudha Misra were emphatic towards these workers and were quoted saying that a sex worker is obviously not surrendering her body to a man because she loves and respects him, but just for sheer survival. However, the loopholes in the work involved in rehabilitating the sex workers are known by the panel and they are also conscious of the fact that the act of rehabilitation would take a lot of time.

The panel, which stated that something positive should be done to rehabilitate the sex workers is headed by senior advocate Pradip Ghosh. They are required to come up with a list of sex workers who are living in a dilapidated state and are willing to rehabilitate. The panel has asked the list to be readied by August 24. The panel was further asked to concentrate on the four metropolitan cities.

The Court also wants the youth of the country to come forward in order to take this cause. An E-mail id, panelonsexworkers @ gmail.com has been created to take feedbacks and inputs from anyone who is willing to participate. The panel told the court that they also have a some NGO’s who have the name and the list of some of the sex workers who want to rehabilitate immediately and is extremely unhappy with the present way of the life.

In a 10 page order, the panel compared the sex workers to characters from Oliver Twist and Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment. The panel working for the cause includes other members such as senior advocate Jayant Bhushan, Saima Hasan of NGO Roshni and Usha Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society.

However, one of the major constraints faced by the panel is the unavailability of the fund granted by the Centre. A permanent space for the office is also required for the panel.
