SC rejects RJD MLA Raj Ballabh's bail plea in rape case
On Thursday, the Supreme Court (SC) rejected the bail plea of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MLA Rajballabh Yadav in a rape case. On September 30, the Patna High Court had granted bail to Yadav, but this was challenged in the SC by the Bihar government's counsel.

The bench headed by Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice A.M. Sapre asked whether Yadav has been released following the bail granted by the Patna High Court earlier. The SC was informed that he was not yet released, and the bench said: "Let him remain in jail."

Apart from the Yadav, the police have named five others as accused in the case. They have been accused of supplying girls to Yadav.

The survivor had expressed her fear for her life after Yadav was granted bail. She reportedly sent messages to journalists, hoping to reach out to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. "He [Yadav] is out of jail...I am scared and afraid for my family. What will happen to them? I am already dead after what happened to me. I have nothing more to lose," she had written.

Yadav's counsel had assured the court that if his bail is confirmed, Yadav would not stay in Bihar till the trial is completed. But the SC refused this argument while declining the bail.

Yadav was named as the main accused by the Nalanda Police after he allegedly raped a minor girl at his residence on February 6. Following the allegation, Yadav was immediately suspended by the RJD party and his party was seized by the police. Earlier, a Bihar court while denying an anticipatory bail to Yadav had also ordered that 13 of his bank accounts be frozen.

In March, Yadav had surrendered before a chief magistrate's court in Bihar Sharif in Nalanda after absconding for almost one month. The court had sent Yadav to jail.
