Scantily-dressed mannequins 'lead to sex crimes'
Of all the preposterous things blamed for perverse actions of men in this country, this one is most ridiculous. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has passed a proposal to ban bikini-clad mannequins outside lingerie shops in Mumbai, which was put forward by a woman Shiv Sena corporator.

Swaraj, who has stayed in Pune, Mumbai and Delhi, finds this proposal as a joke. “It is as stupid as it can get. The stupidity level is same as that of the Khaps in Haryana who blamed consumption of chowmein for the increase in the number of rapes in the country,” he said.

One wonders why people can't find a better excuse for the number of rapes, if they are seriously looking for one.

After the ‘Nirbhaya’ gang rape case, which shook the nation, various things have been blamed for the increase in the number of rapes. This included stupid reason like girls wearing skimpy dresseseven though we know girls wearing saris and salwar kameez too have been raped in broad daylight.

At this juncture, Ankita Srivastava (name changed), an Assistant Professor at Delhi University, said, “It has all got to do with the thinking of men. It needs to change. Gender sensitisation is what we need today rather than indulging into these silly things.”

She fails to understand the need for such ban. “Today, it will be mannequins and tomorrow it will be movies, and day after it will be dresses etc. Banning such mannequins does not hold logic. Will they even ban temples, whose walls contain erotic paintings?” she questions.

Appu, a resident of Mumbai does not understand as to why such things need to be banned and considers it a stupid idea, like the rest. “Such kinds of mannequins are for display itself. It is a marketing strategy whereby they attract their customers,” says Appu.

Even if this ban turns out to be successful, new kind of strategies might have to be worked out to display various products. But, it would not be a surprise, if their new ideas would not be met with criticism, as it has to be displayed in public to grab the attention of customers.

One fails to understand as how will mannequins in lingerie lead to male perversion, when everyone is aware that those mannequins are not for real, but only plastic bodies.
