Pune's Kline Memorial School and Frank Educational Aids are going to organize jointly on April 9 a one-day school-based seminar on the use of science textbooks as effective learning resources. In the seminar to be coordinated by Lalit Kishore, teacher educator and this citizen journalist, the middle school level science teachers of local schools are going to participate.
According to the organizers of the seminar, in most schools, despite the textbooks being the main instructional resources in the classrooms, they are being poorly used in the teaching-learning continuum. If not trained properly in the effective use of the textbook, teachers often tend to use a textbook in deciding what to teach and assign exercises and problems for student’s class work and homework.
The seminar will focus on using the textual material properly; teachers need to be trained to adapt and augment the prescribed textbook by additional material and adaptations for classroom instruction. In other words, a textbook should not only help the teacher in deciding what to teach but how to teach it by making it an effective learning aid. For example, textbooks are limited by the linear presentation of ideas in the print format and need to be adapted and converted into graphic aids and activities for skill development for making a shift towards reading to learn stage at the middle school level. The issues like how to use textbook to help students develop the concepts, thinking abilities and study skills; adapting the Content and its sequence based on student’s prior; making use of the activities and tasks provided in the textbook; encouraging higher order thinking; stressing the technical language of subject matter and terminology, etc., will be discussed in the seminar. The venue school is located in the peaceful suburb of Bibvewadi, about 8 km from the heart of Pune city and is spread over an area of three acres of land.
