DURING THE fifth day of the ongoing Science Conclave at Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad, Dr. Satya P Chauhan, Senior Program Director, Battelle, USA delivered a talk on “translating scientific discovery to address social needs”.

After this Prof. Govind Swaroop from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Pune talked on “Are We Alone in the Universe?” He said that there are around 100 billion galaxies in the observable universe each having 100 billion stars but we still don’t know whether life exists in any of them or not.
He stated that many theories have been proposed to explain the origin of life on earth one of which attributes lightning and volcanoes for sparking life on earth. Some believe that deep-sea hot geysers may have provided suitable environment for evolution of life over millions of years, he said, adding that another hypothesis is that the source of life on the earth is extra-terrestrial. Dr. Stuart Parkin, Manager, Magneto Electronics Group at the IBM Almaden Research Center spoke about the latest technologies in the field of magnetic hard drives. A pioneer in the science and application of spintronic materials, Stuart made discoveries into the behavior of thin-film magnetic structures that were critical in enabling recent increases in the data density and capacity of computer hard-disk drives.
