A science workshop for senior students of Gurukul, Kurukshetra, was held on January 17 in which around 100 students and 10 teachers participated. In his opening address, the head teacher of Gurukul said that due to knowledge explosion it had become necessary to switch over to processes of science rather than content based education of science.
In his inaugural address Dr. Des Raj Vij, former professor of Physics, Kurukshetra University, said that the objective of the workshop was that to make a shift towards teaching physics as an experimental science. We need to make science teaching process-based to empower students to become self learners.
The resource person the workshop, Dr. Lalit Kishore, explained the nature of science and said that science was objective, verifiable and dynamic. He explained the differences between a soft science, hard science and pseudo science. He showed simple experiments to explain various concepts related to sound, wave motion, energy and electrostatics.
Various science processes like observation, classification, experimentation and mental modelling were demonstrated the workshop. The skill of making diagrams and visual symbols were imparted to students. The feedback from students revealed that the workshop was effective and expressed a desire for learning self-study skills
