Scientists successfully grow human eggs in a laboratory
In a first of its kind study, a joint team of scientists from the US and the UK has claimed that they have been successful in growing human eggs in a lab.

As per the scientists, they were successful in developing eggs to a mature stage, a stage where the eggs are ready for fertilization. The study that was published in Molecular Human Reproduction could be path breaking as it would solve the problem of fertility.

But have we reached that stage where we can claim to have a solution for the fertility problems of the world?

While we surely have taken many small steps towards it, we're still far, as the eggs appeared to have many abnormalities thus raising the need for more research into this field.

While the study is a small step, it also shows that in the near future, we may be able to grow human eggs successfully. While experiments involving egg development have been carried out on animals like mice and to a large extent success has been achieved as well, this was the first time such an experiment was conducted on human eggs.

Even though we are still far from actually being able to develop and fertilise eggs, this study has shown the path could lead to new approaches for developing fertility preservation especially those who suffer from diseases such as cancer.

One of the most visible drawbacks of the whole process is that the eggs took only 22 days to reach maturity while in the human body this process takes about 5 months.

So, while the eggs can develop into a healthy embryo or not is still a big question that needs to be answered, the researchers have failed to explain what caused this abnormally fast growth in the cells.
