Scrap cricket, it wastes man hours in millions
Cricket has many other things to offer by way of market promotion, tax, employment, travel and tourism etc. All these notwithstanding, it is really staggering to note that this nation wastes so much time every year for this. It needs to be scrapped
I AM very much conscious that I am going to be ripped apart for what I am going to write about cricket and the manpower loss it causes by way of watching it live or on the TV.

Just imagine that out of our one billion plus population, about a 24 million strong part of our work force is engaged in watching a cricket match live on the TV for some six hours or so.

In this context, let us look at the implications of these six hours being spent for watching cricket in terms of economy and manpower. One man day is eight hours and out of these eight hours, only six hours are taken as productive hours. That is, six hours is a man day in terms of money or economy.

24 million (this figure is taken for the convenience of calculation) people spend some 6 hours, for a minimum of 5 times every year for watching this match or that match. In simple terms, they spend 24 million man days every time for the sake of entertainment or recreation or sports or stress-busting or ‘sportmanship’ or whatever.

That means, every year, we lose 120 million man days a year. Taking that there are two hundred and fifty average working days in a year, what you get in terms of actual productive years is far beyond your imagination. Can a nation like ours afford to spend these many man years every year on cricket, as we keep on dreaming big about making India a super power by the next decade or so?

Apart from amusement, cricket has many other things to offer by way of marketing, tax, employment, travel and tourism, popularity, motivation, foreign currency inflow and so on goes the list. All these notwithstanding, it is really staggering to realize that this nation wastes this much time every year for cricket.

All battles are not won out of sheer military mettle and arms power. The men in the front have to have great grit and guts to meet challenges and undergo sheer difficulties in tough conditions. Sports and games make men and women prepared for the same.

Unfortunately, such times of war are over, and we do not need to keep millions of people fit for those non-coming wars. If sport is to have such a motto, the time is ripe enough to set it aside, and the aim of sport needs to be made into ‘nation building.’

So we can begin by cutting down on eulogizing cricket. This could save for a nation the same way a victorious war would. Both are the same here. Here, the war is against manpower loss. The war is between manpower loss and cricket hype.

There is a ploy. For a vested some, this nation needs to stay as it has always been; subjugated, underdeveloped and Westward-looking. We Indians seem to be glad that we have a destination to turn to – the West. For the same, cricket is the best form of entertainment.

Let us scrap it if we want to develop.

.Arent those cricket matches being watched mainly on the weekends or in spare time-surely people are not watching all their cricket during work hours. If people were made to work during their leisure time surely India would become a very depressed and psychologically affected nation like their friends in the West-what about the family time spent watching cricket-doesnt that foster and develop a nation in the long term?
