Scrap IPL, encourage domestic cricket tournaments
Indian Premier League or IPL which just completed its sixth season has revealed its darker side of dishonest practices. It is shameful to watch, hear and read about the ongoing investigation on the allegations leveled against cricketers, celebrities and organisers. But the scandal has really opened the doors to one section for money-making as well as their supremacy in this field of sports.

Ever since One-day internationals started, cricket fans have been reading and hearing about the dishonest practices that intruded into the ‘gentleman’s game’. After the allegations against former IPL chairman, BCCI should have scrapped the event, but it did not do so. One sad thing is the BCCI has not given much importance to famous domestic cricket trophy matches and went ahead with conducting another season of the IPL.

Indian Premier League should be called as “Indian Preponderant League,” as it has violated the cricketing ethics. Governed by people other than cricketers, the BCCI, instead promoting the game, has made it a profit making organisation in the name of sports.

The BCCI’s governing body keeping in mind the present trend thought of such IPL event. Why didn’t they bring changes in the format of famous domestic trophy matches named after famous Indian cricketing legends? They should have converted three/four day trophy matches to 120 over matches and limited over trophy matches to T-20/50, besides allowing franchisee to bid for each and every team playing all these trophies from past several decades. They should have also allowed official sponsors for each and every team.

This would have been a big encouragement to the budding cricketers as well as financial support to the teams and various associations. The BCCI’s commercial interests would have remained alive too.

The politicians and others who talk about penal action or fresh legislation to curtail dishonest practices in sports should build pressure and amend the rules to encourage domestic league matches and local budding sportsmen. Various sports bodies should be governed by talented sportspersons of the respective sports.
