As a part of novel initiative to re-establish lives of ex-convicts, Adarsh Mitra Mandal has given 18 ex-convicts an acre of land free of cost, the rest two acres is given for building their homes. The organisation has also provided them with jobs
WE OFTEN think that we have only one life to live; but for some it’s not true. For some life gives them another chance to live- starting afresh all over again. Some are blessed with second life. And if it’s for the convicts, who have spend their lives in prison and after coming out they are gifted with a brand new life, then it seems even more surreal.
Yes, this has happened. In an attempt to rehabilitate ex-convicts and give them a chance to begin life a new, The Adarsh Mitra Mandal has given 18 ex-convicts an acre of land free of cost, the rest two acres is given for building their homes. Not only this, this organisation has provided them with jobs as well. Now, isn’t it a second life they’ve been given?
The Adarsh Mitra Mandal had started the Criminal Adoption Scheme (CAS), a rehabilitation programme for convicts about year and a half year ago. The main aim of this scheme is to give these people a second chance in life and enable them to earn a living without resorting to crime.
I think it’s a very noble effort on part of this organisation for the ex-convicts, who have already spent their punishment term in jail and now would have some help to start their lives all over again. It becomes very difficult to start your life from a scratch once you come out of the closed bars because for that period you were completely cut off from the world, which was changing every second. Helping hand like of such organisations really motivate these convicts to again settle in this world and take care of their families.
The effort by this small organisation draws our attention to issues like these, which we never even consider. The issue of rehabilitation is a very important get ignored one by all of us. We never thought of how these ex-convicts could re settle in their lives with their family to look after and no job to earn their living. Many cannot get a job because of their criminal backgrounds. Even our society is not open to accept these people as they still see them as criminals.
It’s time that we should understand the situation of these ex-convicts and the problems they are facing even after coming out of jails. Their life becomes even more miserable after coming out as they have to deal with lot more troubles and set backs. The government should play a very important and integral part in this issue. The system of rehabilitation of ex-convicts, which is there only in law books should be reinforced right away. Organisations like Adarsh Mitra Mandal should also come upfront in order to pressurise the administration for the rehabilitation scheme.
Schemes like these will only act as a helping hand for these convicts, who have already spend their tenure in jail for years. This is for their tough innings in outside world. It should not be taken as an advantage given to the criminals as such because its not for the convicts inside the prison but for those who have already spend their tenure in jail and will now be out in the world struggling for their survival in changed circumstances.
