Sehwag's poor show: 198 runs in 8 Test innings, 30 runs in 3 ODIs

VIRENDER SEHWAG is going through a terrible phase in international cricket. The recent ongoing series down under is testimonial to the said lines. He has just scored 198 runs in the last 8 Test innings in Australia. In the shorter format of the game too, he has just amassed 30 runs in the last 3 ODIs. It is time that the Indian selectors look into the matter and drop him from the squad itself. Will the selectors take this huge call?
The problem is that
Virender Sehwag is not learning from his mistakes. He has been getting out in the same manner, where his footwork is always found wanting. It is a regular sight for an Indian cricket fan to see Sehwag hitting balls to the fence and getting out playing a rash shot the next ball. He needs to curtail his shot making and play according to the merits of the ball, like the rest of the batsmen of other countries do. How long can the selectors resist his care-free style of cricket? Lines have to be drawn now. In the last match against Sri Lanka yesterday, Rohit Sharma was dropped to accommodate Sehwag. The Indian team can give Sehwag as many chances as he want but not a youngster, who is the immediate future.
He is one of the best batsmen that
India has produced in the decade but a player is only as good as his last game. One look at his past games does not auger well for him. He has been basking in the glory of various match-winning knocks that he has played for the country. People love the way he bats. But if he does not score runs, he will have no takers. He needs to score runs as soon as possible to win the faith of the Indian team has been entrusted upon him. Else, it could be a long wait for Sehwag at the selector’s door, which he would want to avoid.
There are many young players who could be brought into the side to replace him. Sehwag seems to have taken his place for granted, as the team management does not drop him from any matche or series. He gets to play for India, day in and out. Had he been playing for the Australian side, he would have been shown the exit door like
Ricky Ponting. If the Indian team is trying to expose the youngsters at the international level, in preparation for the 2015
World Cup, time is ripe when the senior members are not playing well. They can be ‘rested’ and youngsters like Tiwari can be brought into the side.
The Indian board does not take any decision decisively. Hence, it is assured that the selectors would give him all the chances in the world to prove himself during the ongoing series. As always, he will play a match winning innings and then cement his place, after which he will fail in the next 10 innings or so. It is the Indian Cricket Cycle for you, which has benefitted inconsistent players like Virender Sehwag.
