Selecting the President: The politics of blackening the face of India 19 June, 2012
The President's position is important for every party be it the ruling or the opposition. As history has shown, parties chose candidates who are their passive supporters. But looking at the powers vested in the position and seeing its importance for the nation, why not have a general poll for it?

SINCE THE last few weeks the happening that is in news is Indian Presidential Elections 2012. Indian Presidentship is one of the key governmental positions that make the person holdingthe position head of the legislature, executive and judiciary branches of Indian Democracy. The person is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces. Also, the powers to pardon or lessen somebody's sentence also lie with the President. As a layman we have a basic sense of the huge importance that the Indian President holdsin our democratic country.

But, as the history speaks for itself, the presidentship and its candidate selection process has always been a political affair aiming to help a political party in becoming the ruling party. And this time again it has become more self-satisfying agenda-specific and controversial. Different parties nominated their candidates, such as Congress favor Pranab Mukherjee, our Finance Minister, BJP and Trinamool Congress supports APJAbdul Kalam and PA Sangma. Ministers like Mulayam Singh Yadav have named our Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as a capable candidate for Presidentiship, we can see the politics behind targeting the post of the Prime Minister.

We know the reason for so much of political game and support etc, which is, this post is a very important position as whoever will be the President would help out his party of choice in the next general elections of 2014. The ruling Congress party is trying hard to re-establish its candidate in the President chair, like it did in case of Pratibha Patil. But, currently Congress seems to be in minority andappears to be in need for support of the regional and smaller parties to install its man as the President, which is Pranab Mukherjee. BJP and Mamata Banerjee just in order to oppose the ruling party candidate are supporting Dr. Kalam, without minding their derogatory statements and campaigns.

Now when Dr. Kalam has passed a statement that he would not contest for President Post, the parties have started supporting PA Sangma. Does this make any sense at all? A party needs to have a strong agenda behind nominating a candidate for the President office, but does it appears like so? What the general public gets to witness isthe political game, derogatory statements and constant switch of loyalty of ministers. So like before, India is witnessing political controversies over elections of the President. Ourchosen leaders are making fun of themselves, the parties and the nation by hurting anothergovernment representative's political image.

The democracy gives us a right to vote, choose our leader but what happens after that? The leaders make a joke of themselves, pull each other down and derogate image of the country. It's not as simple as saying we chose the wrong leader because we as commonman made a choice based on the promises and perception. We expected they would makethe right decisions on our behalf, would say the right things but what if they don't? A case inpoint is Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal was fed up with the Left Front, Singur, Nandigrametc, and they were dying for a change. They picked up the only alternative they saw Mamata Banerjee. But how many of the Bengalis would support her today when she pullsdown the president's image for her own ego? There should be some mechanism to recall the leaders after we have voted them or at leastsome mechanism to stop them from hurting the image of nation.

If President's position is so important then why can't we have a poll on it? I feel what India needs is a fresh procedure related to Presidentship post starting fromnomination to selection. An independent panel should be appointed that comprises ofmembers selected upon merit and also on who they are answerable to? Members who areneutral, well educated, experienced and who have a sense of international and national politics, economics and culture should be appointed to the panel. And, this panel should bevested with the rights to select the candidates for the President post and nominating for thegeneral public. No political party should have a role to play in the selection or nomination process. But, if it is not so important post then better would be just call off this office and itscandidature, amend the Constitution, we don't need another puppet whose stomach weneed to fill with our income.

Why do we always blame the Politicians? Don't we choose them?
Deepak Asthana
It is a nice article. It seems you are as much fade up with the coming presidential election as anyone else. But don't blame politicians; debating, discussing, blaming, belching (right in our face) are what they are suppose to do...they are simply doing their duties. God knows how much SP has made out of that deal (supporting congress for Pranab Mukherjee for the presidential post). Anyways, now come to the point: I have certain issues with your propositions. Firstly, a general election for the presidential post will create a conflict amongst the President (the head of the state, who is also a part of the legislative body), the Cabinet, and the Parliament. This will be a chaotic situation for all. Secondly, who will appoint the members of the panel that you have proposed? Look, the problem is not with the constitution; it is believed to the best in the world. The problem is the people; the very us.
