Self-styled spiritualist Bhaiyyu Maharaj departs leaving behind questions: Is suicide a remedy?
Self-styled spiritualist Bhaiyyu Maharaj, reportedly committed suicide by shooting himself in the head at his posh residence in Indore on June 12.

The police stated that a suicide note was found which read, "Somebody should be there to handle duties of family. I am leaving to much stressed out, fed up."

Apparently, distressed by domestic discord that he couldn't handle, he committed suicide. However, an opposition leader has alleged that Bhaiyyu Maharaj was under stress due to politicisation of his concern over illegal mining in the Narmada River. The police said the case will be investigated from different angles.

Bhaiyyu Maharaj had many ardent supporters and huge fan following in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh because of his style and bearing as well as his spiritual and social works. Some political leaders and celebs were also his disciples.

On hearing about his death, a large number of his followers and supporters gathered in front of the hospital on June 12. Similarly, a large number of supporters and disciples gathered when his final rites were performed on June 13. His daughter, Kuhu, performed the last rites at Meghdoot Crematorium in the city.

According to psycho-analysts, when a well known person commits or attempts suicide, he/she often has a history of depression, trauma, sudden loss of power or control, bereavement, threat to life, etc. Such deaths leave survivors and followers in a state of deep shock and agony since they were the source of inspiration, hope, trust, comfort and idealization for them.

In the realm of spiritualism, one dominant view is that suicide and self-harm are offences against the Supreme Being since one's existence is His part. Those who have understood the real meaning and sanctity of life will never even think of committing suicide, say many existentialists.
