'Sexy Durga' controversy: No right to freedom approves mindless titles for the sake of cheap publicity
Another controversy on freedom of expression has been raised with the screening of Malayalam movie 'Sexy Durga' directed by Sanal Kumar Shashidharan, which had remained unscreened at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2017 due to CBFC's order.

The director along with his supporters and fans started protesting against CBFC's objection and painted the matter as a serious blow to democracy where creative freedom must prevail.

As we have reiterated umpteen times that no right is absolute and the right to creative liberty also comes along with riders. Initially, the CBFC had objected to the title 'Sexy Durga' and thus the director revised the title to 'S Durga' which was approved by the CBFC. But then, the director manipulated the title to 'S### Durga'. One can understand if S Durga is written in such a way, what it means!

Now, the first question is, whether in the name of creative liberty, one can use a title that has no relevance to the story of the film but hurts the sentiments of people?

As learned from various sources, the story line goes like this:

Durga and Kabir, a couple, (not clear whether married or not) elope in the night through a highway. The story is totally based on the trauma suffered by Durga due to occurrence of various incidents while moving in a stranger's vehicle.

The total story is totally based on the experiences of the girl through her journey with her husband/lover on a risky highway, in the backdrop of a male chauvinistic society.

Also, it is shown that a procession of Goddess Durga is being taken out by the worshipers. However, there is no link between this procession and the main storyline. But, one can take a message home that while people are worshiping Goddess Durga, at the same time, how shabbily they treat an ordinary girl Durga!

But how does the title 'Sexy Durga' justify the story? Isn't the fact that the director wanted more controversy for his movie (which is really an excellent film)? Does freedom of expression include mindless titles just for the sake of publicity?

And then after CBFC approved the title 'S Durga', why the director changed it again to 'S### Durga'? Doesn't it defy CBFC's order? Who does the director want to portray as sexy? Is it the traumatic girl Durga or Goddess Durga?

Fundamental rights come along with fundamental responsibilities too. The director of the movie has shown irresponsible behaviour and decimated a good film, also dragging it in to controversy.
