The move to create a separate Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee by Haryana govt was vociferously opposed by BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal in the Parliament today as both parties described it as meddling in the religious affairs of Sikhs
PARLIAMENT WAS adjourned twice on Thursday (August 6), over the issue of creating a separate Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee for the state of Haryana. The reported move by Haryana government was vociferously opposed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in the Parliament today as both parties described it as meddling in the religious affairs of Sikhs.
Both BJP and SAD MPs alleged that the Haryana government was trying to create a wedge in the Sikh community. They alleged that the creation of separate SGPC for Haryana was meant to take advantage in the ensuing Assembly polls in the state.
MPs from both parties shouted slogans and stormed into the well of the Lower House. They demanded a statement from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the issue and said that bifurcation of SGPC was akin to meddling with the affairs of Sikhs.
SAD MP Rattan Singh Ajnala said that this move would be opposed and warned that an agitation would be launched by the community. He also accused the Congress government of paying vote bank politics in the state.
