India is the world's largest functioning democracy. The constitution tells the entire world that we, in India, practice justice, liberty, equality and fraternity and we are a sovereign socialist secular democratic republic country.
IT WAS in the year of 1950 that the wise men gave this country the constitution. The constitution states that this country is world's largest functioning democracy. The constitution tells the entire world that we, in India, practice justice, liberty, equality and fraternity and we are a sovereign socialist secular democratic republic country.
It surprises me when people around me say that the constitution has entered the clan of senior citizens. I do not agree with them. Do you want to know why? Here's my argument.
After centuries of foreign rules, India came together as a nation. A nation with features of both, unitary and federal models; a nation that is a live example of unity in diversity. A nation that is unique in more than one way. And so is the constitution.
In the background of these centuries, this 60 year old young lady does not come across as a senior citizen to me. To me it has just entered the adolescence...trying to move away from its childhood and entering the process of maturity. When I say this about the constitution, I certainly do not mean to show any disrespect towards the great men who contributed endless sleepless nights for this huge creation. This change of childhood to adolescence is applicable to the people who actually reflect the ideology of a certain country.
We, as citizens are still not mature enough to understand our priorities when it comes to the country. We like to have all the privilege of all possible rights and merely forget about our duties. And despite this all, we still have the guts to keep asking for more. Is this behavioural pattern not similar to those kids who want to seek all the attention of their parents when they want something and ignore them very well when it is their turn to do something when asked for? Except for those who lack the sensibility, grown ups do not generally do such things. And that is precisely why I feel that our democracy, our constitution is not old yet.
A lot is to be done. A lot more is yet to come. And with a little more maturity by everyone, I am sure the country and the constitution and our proud democracy will soon be world's most appreciated and looked up to models.
