Shootout near Nehru Place, wanted criminal arrested
A wanted criminal was arrested by Delhi police in a shootout near Delhi's Nehru Place metro station.

The shootout took place at 2:30 am near Eros hotel, a luxury hotel at the Nehru Place office complex.

The police were able to arrest Akbar, a notorious thief who had a Rs 25,000 reward on his head but the other members of his gang escaped. Akbar is wanted in cases of attempted murder, theft, robbery and snatching.

"After the shootout, Akbar alias Danish was arrested while his accomplice Asif managed to escape with other associates," NDTV quoted senior Delhi Police officer Romil Baaniya.

As per reports, the police had received a tip off that the wanted criminals would be visiting the area on a bullet motorcycle. To arrest them, the police had erected barricades on the Nehru Place main road. Near Eros hotel, the police saw a bullet motorcycle approaching the barricade but it suddenly turned around and started speeding.

The police chased and intercepted the gang till the spot of firing. On finding themselves surrounded, Akbar and his aide allegedly started firing when they saw the police. The gang shot at two policemen but the policemen were able to escape unhurt due to their bulletproof jackets. In the shootout, 13 rounds of bullets were fired.

In December, Akbar had been involved in a gunfight at Pul Prahaladpur after which the police announced a reward of Rs 25,000 for his arrest

"A reward of Rs 25,000 was declared on him after a shootout case in Pul Prahaladpur area where he had fired on police officials earlier. He is wanted in several cases of robbery, theft, snatching and attempt to murder. A case has been registered and further investigations are underway," DNA quoted DCP, South- East, Romil Baaniya.

The police have now launched a search operation to nab the escaped criminal, Asif.
