Should Uttar Pradesh be split into four parts?
If you look at north-east states, which are smaller than many Indian states in India, they are not performing well due to lack of resources, political, economic problems and transferring rights from one state to another.

UTTAR PRADESH Chief Minister Mayawati’s proposal to divide the state into four smaller parts – Purvanchal, Avadh Pradesh, Bundelkhand and Paschim Pradesh has sparked off a serious debate. The opposition parties have criticized the move as a political trick with an eye on the 2012 assembly polls. Mayawati thinks that smaller states could be governed better and it was easy to concentrate on developmental efforts in fewer districts. Meanwhile, she has put the ball in the court of the central government to decide her cabinet approval on dividing Uttar Pradesh.

“I agree we need better administration in the state but splitting it in four parts will not be solution,” said a student from Purva High School, Lucknow. “Chief Minister should talk about giving better governance than splitting it,” added another student.

Are smaller states more developed? The state ranks poorly in human development index but jointly it has strong economic growth, stable state finances and investments in infrastructure, housing and education. Four states would mean four capitals with concentration and attention plentiful on each with transformation of old towns into big ones. If you look at North-East states, which are smaller geographically than many other Indian states, they are not performing well due to lack of resources, political, economic problems and transferring rights from one state to another. Bigger problem is about basic amenities such as electricity, water and roads, etc. In India, caste-based politics is given more importance and it will have serious repercussions in dividing people on various lines. Better administration can be achieved by supremacy system in term of laws and order not by dividing sate for merely vote banks politics.
