OPPOSITION OF any proposed change is a universal truth. But if the intention and objective of the change is clear, it must brought in with a complete road map of transition from existing system to new one and the target objective of it. It must have a provision of periodic independent review to ensure that plan is implemented as per its intent.
Students must not be forced in the fire of number of exams (10th Board, 12th Board, Medical, Engineering etc), which diverts them from very basic need of education which is upliftment of once knowledge, creativity, personality and thinking. Study should be more of fun and learning than just the objective of clearing exams.
Every educational institution should have evaluation process to insure that different category of students are well identified and needful students are helped to catch-up with others. It should be responsibility of the institution to insure that students are produced to a quality, who can take challenge of next branch of study they want to get into.
The objective of exam should be to qualify that the student can take-up challenge of respective course. They should not get admitted in wrong course and struggle to cope-up with its requirements. We should have minimum number of exams for specific branch of study and admission in different educational institution should happen based on that nationwide. For example, if one person appears in exam of science, based on that he/she should be picked up for medical, engineering, physics, chemistry, agriculture, biology, mathematics, accounting etc. Similarly exam of arts should be used to qualify student for economics, history, geography, sociology, political science, law etc. These central exams must be conducted well in advance and results produce (at least three to four months before admission for next academic course) to insure a right match between student, course and institute.
It is unfortunate that we don’t have enough educational institution in different area to admit all deserving students in the course of their choice and ability. This leads to disqualifying even deserving candidates. I believe the step of Union minister of human resource and development Kapil Sibal will improve the situation.
Our educational system must ensure that institutions operate at particular level and students don’t feel help less (today there are many colleges running under UGC in the country where no class happens, they are left at mercy of coaching institutes to clear the exams). Adequate review and responsibility is fixed to insure quality output. This is the only way our human resources can be produced to level to take global challenge and have quality carrier and life.
